OUR DAY AT THE LANDFILL

pic_of_the_landfillOn September 18, seven  students from Mr.Bottelier’s fifth period  Science Class went on a field trip to Waste Management’s landfill. These seven students are, Timothy McNair, De`Shara Sturdivant, Brittany Howard, Marc Mack, Terrence Cummings, Shamika Alexander, and myself Darnell Howard. We were very surprised at what we saw. As we talked about landfills in class we thought that it would just be piles of trash in an area, but to our surprise we mostly saw dirt. We found out that all the trash is buried, but in a certain way. At the landfill we in fact learned how the workers operate and how the trash there is put away properly and there is only a little smell. and compact the trash. We also learned that when the trash decomposes it releases a natural gas known as methane; a gas used to heat homes. Waste management collects this gas and sells it; this helps us as a community so that we can use less of our natural resources.
